WIRELESS CHARGING EXPLAINED

WIRELESS CHARGING EXPLAINED

Electromagnetic induction recharges smart phones, connected watches and modern headphones without wires to connect. A short practical guide to take full advantage of it.

Wireless charging has been around for years, whether in electric toothbrushes, phones, robot vacuums or wireless headphones. Even if the foundations of induction have been known for a long time - the inventor Nikola Tesla experimented with this technology at the turn of the twentieth century - his recent adoption in more and more varied devices is leading to a renewed interest in techno industry.

How It Works ?

The inside of a wireless charger launched five years ago. Recent advances make it possible to produce chargers that are both smaller and more powerful.
Wireless charging uses an electromagnetic field to transfer energy from one device to another. The field is created when electricity passes through a coil in the charger, and the energy is converted back into electricity through a second coil, placed in the compatible device. Wireless charging as we find it today in electronic devices only works at a very short distance; so, for example, you have to place your smartphone directly on the charging surface for the energy to be transferred.

Health and Electromagnetic Induction

Several studies have explored the effects of electromagnetic fields on health in recent decades, especially in relation to cell phones. Most scientific research indicates that the doses humans are normally exposed to do not seem to have a harmful effect on their health. Note also that the intensity of the fields created by the wireless chargers decreases rapidly when moving away, which minimizes the risk.

Different Models of Chargers

Compatible electronic devices, such as Apple's iPhone XS smartphone, Google's Pixel 3 and Samsung's Galaxy S10, are often sold without a wireless charger. Consumers must therefore find a compatible model that suits them. These are offered in different formats.

Chargers are usually sold with one or two charging surfaces, which can be flat (which is more convenient for putting on a headphone case, for example) or upright (so that you can see your phone more easily while charging).

The unit should be placed in a fairly precise position to align the coils and ensure that the energy transfer is working. So not all phone formats are compatible with all forms of charger. Note that Apple had tried to work around this problem by creating a charging pad called AirPower (the image at the top of the ticket), where up to three devices could be placed without precise alignment. The company, however, abandoned the creation of its product last Friday, a year and a half after its announcement, citing insurmountable technical problems.

In addition to personal chargers for the home, there are also optional wireless charging surfaces in a large proportion of new motor vehicles, Ikea furniture and airports.

Are All Devices Compatible?

The majority of wireless charging devices launched in recent years are compatible with the Qi standard. The charger built into the BMW X5 2019, for example, supplies as much a Samsung phone as a Google pixel or Apple's AirPods 2 headphones.

There are some exceptions, however. Smart watches, even if they use similar charging technologies, often have their own protocol, and therefore require their own chargers.

5 W, 7.5 W, 15 W: Not All Chargers Are Equal

Not all smartphones have the same wireless charging power. The new iPhone can take advantage of 5-watt and 7.5-watt chargers, while Samsung's new Galaxy phones can be recharged even faster with a 12-watt charger. The Huawei P30 Pro, announced last week, pushes the bar even further, with a wireless charging of 15 watts. The more powerful a charger is, the faster the recharge will be, provided the device on it can enjoy it. However, the speed is generally lower than regular wired charging.

Note also that a 15-watt charger will not be three times faster than a 5-watt charger, for example. Wireless charging actually heats electronic devices. To avoid damaging them, the power of the charge decreases as the temperature increases. A 15 watt charger can start at full power, but quickly down to the speed of a 5 watt charger.

The Future of Wireless Charging

Future wireless charging standards will be powerful enough to power small appliances.
More than 500 million electronic devices are compatible with Qi wireless charging worldwide, including a large majority of phones. Technology, however, has an interest that goes far beyond personal gadgets.

The Wireless Power Consortium, the organization behind the Qi protocol, is working on new standards to regulate small appliances in the kitchen. It will then be possible to simply place his compatible food processor on a surface embedded in his countertop to activate it.

Wireless charging could also soon be used to power hard-to-reach medical devices such as pacemakers. Wireless charging could also be integrated into road pavements to recharge city buses throughout the day while parked at stops, for example.

Several companies are also currently developing new charging protocols operating over greater distances, for example to charge any device in a room. However, it took a decade after the launch of the Qi protocol for it to be adopted by the general public. It will probably be necessary to wait a long time before such uses are transposed from laboratories to everyday life.

HUAWEI DEVELOP AN ALTERNATIVE TO ANDROID

HUAWEI DEVELOP AN ALTERNATIVE TO ANDROID

With the expected end of Android updates on its smartphones, the Chinese telecom giant Huawei could be tempted to implement his "plan B": offer its own operating system, competing with those of Google and Apple, with the thorny challenge of convincing developers and users.

Trapped by the ups and downs of the Sino-US trade dispute, Huawei, the world's number two in the smartphone market, is now looking for a parade.

Following the restrictions imposed by the Trump administration, Google - which the Android system equips the vast majority of smartphones in the world, including those of Huawei - announced Sunday that he was going to have to cut the bridges with the Chinese giant before Washington finally granted him Monday a period of three months.

Under pressure, the behemoth of Shenzhen (southern China) could accelerate the development of its own operating system, on which it is already working since 2012 according to press information.

A potentially vital alternative: Android has certainly said that it will continue for the moment to make security updates, but ultimately, for lack of such updates, Huawei smartphones could be victims of security breaches and obsolescence , can no longer use the latest versions of popular applications such as Gmail or Google Maps.

Alternative Operating System

Huawei had already admitted to working on an alternative operating system: "We are getting ready. If we do not have to use these systems (like Android), we will have to be well armed, "said Richard Yu, general manager of the group's general public, in an interview in March with the German newspaper Die Welt.

"It's our plan B. But of course we preferred to work in concert with the ecosystems of Google and Microsoft," he said.

Premonitory remarks: this platform Huawei, currently developed in beta form and called "Hongmeng", "will now gradually replace Android," said Monday the official Chinese newspaper Global Times, citing the local press.

For some experts, it was inescapable: Huawei "knew well that as a giant telecom, he was ultimately to control the main technologies," says AFP Wong Kam Fai, professor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

"They already have their system, but are not ready" to broadcast it, he observes. "It would have been perfect if they were three years older, but it's happening now, and now they have to speed up."

Huawei has, however, always been cautious about the subject - developing an operating system with the entire ecosystem that accompanies it, so as to appeal to users and developers, is eminently complex.

Oure the Android of Google, the only other sufficiently widespread operating system is the iOS of Apple, available exclusively on iPhones.

Microsoft had tried to launch a mobile version of its famous Windows in 2010, but had managed to offer it on its own phones. The Windows Phone had not met with success and Microsoft abandoned the adventure in 2017, even if its operating system will not disappear until the end of 2019. As for the system "free of rights" Tizen developed by Samsung, it remains confidential.

"Exceptionally Difficult"

In the opinion of the experts, the challenge is not only technological: it takes years to gain the confidence of smartphone manufacturers and application developers, to encourage them to adapt their programs to the new system, to seduce users with a varied offer.

Designing an operating system "effectively and successfully is exceptionally difficult," says Ryan Whalen of the Hong Kong University Center for Law and Technology.

"Look at Nokia, BlackBerry and Microsoft: all have failed in their attempts," and Huawei will, in addition, lead by "a competitive handicap" because rivals in the smartphone market will continue to use Android, he added .

Of course, Huawei can eventually rely on other Chinese manufacturers, such as Oppo or Xiaomi, to adopt.

But without access to the full version of Android, the popular services of Google, not to mention the many applications available on the Google Play store, Huawei may have trouble convincing consumers outside China to choose its phones.

And even as the Chinese giant has already established itself, especially in Europe, thanks to its advanced smartphones - praised especially for the quality of their camera - and launched during lavish ceremonies.

HUAWEI CHALLENGES IN COURT, LAW LIMITING ITS SALE IN THE UNITED STATES

HUAWEI CHALLENGES IN COURT, LAW LIMITING ITS SALE IN THE UNITED STATES

The Chinese technology giant Huawei filed a petition in a US court challenging the constitutionality of a law limiting the sale of its telecommunications equipment.

Wednesday's action is the latest in a current Huawei confrontation with the US government, which says China's telecommunications company is a threat to international cyber security.

Song Liuping, senior legal officer, announced that Huawei has filed a motion for summary judgment asking the court to rule on a military spending provision prohibiting the government and its subcontractors from using Huawei's equipment.

The world's largest network equipment manufacturer is fighting a US campaign to convince its allies to stop doing business with the company.

HOW TECHNOLOGY HELPS FOR MORE EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

How technology helps for more effective communication

Technology definitely influences many aspects of our everyday life, especially in terms of communication. Progress in concepts such as computer, mobile and global technologies has facilitated the transfer and receipt of information at local and international level. By providing convenience, flexibility and rapid information exchange, technology improves all phases of communication.

Mobile phones
Advances in cellular technology have improved and redefined how contact was made. Now we can get in touch with relatives and friends by touching only one button all over the world. This was not the case years before cellular technology emerged. Now, due to the many strategically placed cell towers, we can call to share our thought or ask a quick question while we're in the car or going to work.

Computers
The development of different types of computers has the greatest impact on communication. Computerized systems operate ATMs, supermarket box scanners, and even global cartographic systems for vehicles. PCs offer access to email, instant text messaging, word processing and information websites, all of which make it easy to create and share information. In addition, web-based telephony companies, such as Skype, allow us to see and talk to others through the computer screen at any time from anywhere in the world.

Companies
Businesses rely on day-to-day communication technologies, and without them they would probably have difficulty connecting with employees and customers. Thanks to new technologies, business meetings can be delivered via live webinars through dedicated software that allows employees to get up-to-date information from the comfort of their homes. Preparing business correspondence or creating promotional brochures for customers is easier because of word processing programs like Microsoft Word. From telephone systems, conference options and electronic projectors that show graphs and charts, companies rely on technology for effective communication.

International Relations
Technology has improved international communication in many ways. We can watch television programs from other countries like Asia and Europe and get real-time live news from satellites. The Internet allows us to publish photos and content to share with relatives and friends anywhere in the world through sites like Myspace and Facebook. Even traveling internationally is easier because of specialized sites that allow you to buy airline tickets and hotel reservations for your holiday.
